USB Foot Controllers are programmable and can emulate any combination of keystrokes. Most come with simple software that you use to program and save to the device. The gives you hands free control of your DAW, Music player or any software. The come as single, duo and triple models starting as low as $10 for a signal and up to $150 for a triple heavy duty model.
I have always used a footswitch system to control the playback of my live backing tracks.
I use Win Amp as a player so all I need is the ability to start, stop and advance the playlist with my feet.
It’s odd that these USB foot switches have been around for many years but I have never heard mention of them by other musicians. They are so simple in operation and can be programmed to do any keystroke. The uses on stage and in the studio are limitless. Mostly I’m using mine for live playback control, but I also use it to control the transport of Sonar.
At this point in time I counted about a dozen brands on the market. The price ranges from $10 for a single made in China.
Just Google USB foot controllers or USB foot switches and you’ll have pages of offers from Philips, X Keys, and a bunch of no name Chinese suppliers via Amazon.
I have used an X keys for over 10 years which is the highest end of the price and quality in these offerings. So I thought I'd try the cheapest one on the market the PC Sensor from China.
It was delivered to my Post box directly via China Post for a total of $30.99 Can.
This is the actual companies web site and looks like you can order it here, but I used Amazon.

I like the software for this one. The pedal itself uses Windows generic keyboard drivers when you first plug it in. The software is used to program the pedal. Open the software and type the keystroke directly into the GUI and “assign” it to the pedal. You can now unplug it and move it to another computer and after Windows installs the generic driver it will remember the keystrokes you assigned to it. Real simple to use. So this would allow you to own a dozen of these and each one programmed differently. You see the possibilities now don't you?
It is defiantly not as robust as the USA made Xkeys and sure enough the center switch is already failing after only a month of very light use. I'm glad I have my Xkeys for live work still.
I looked at a few of the other web sites and it seems they will all be very similar in operation. The Scythe brand looks appealing but I could not find a 3 way pedal on US or Canadian Amazon. Just the 2 way model. The 2 way model is about $40 Can so it's more expensive but still a good deal. I think I'll order one in a bit just to try out. The company makes 1, 2 and 3 pedal models available over in UK and Europe.

The Philips looks like it is as built as sturdy as the Xkeys, and sells for $90 Can. Not clear on it's software as they only mention dictation machines.

Anyhow I thought I would post this as I believe a lot of you would find one of these pedals ultimately indispensable around the studio. It is so cool to do overdubs and keep your hands on your instrument. Not only that, I'm sure you all know what a pain it is to even get some control surfaces to talk to your DAW. These are so simple because they are really just another keyboard/ mouse interface.
The cheap ones are OK for light use but if your planning on using one professionaly get an X keys.
