ADAM Audio A44H by Graham~
In short
Earlier this year I reviewed the ADAM Audio A7V from the new A Series of monitors and I was so impressed with their performance and all round feature set that they actually ended up staying here with me and replacing the main monitors in my home studio. A new addition to the A Series is a low profile 2 way monitor called the A44H. ADAM say they designed these low profile monitors to deliver similar results to the impressive A7V’s…and it is these monitors that are the subject of today's review. Based on my experience with the A7V’s, I had high expectations ...but due to their compact size I also had some reservations.
At this point I encourage you to take a look at the A7V review here because many of the features stated there are also included in these monitors. ADAM Audio A7V

The ADAM Audio A44H is a 19 inch wide low profile active monitor that consists of two 4 inch ‘Multi-Layer Mineral’ woofers and an ‘X-ART’ tweeter. Similar to the other monitors in the series the tweeter is rotatable by either 90 or 180 degrees so whether you'd prefer them to stand vertical or horizontal ADAM Audio have you covered. Priced at $699 each they are also designed to allow them to be placed on a standard 19 inch rack shelf or neatly below eye level. Due to their low profile I can see them being a very good option for a multi channel setup and in fact an A44H would be an excellent option as the center speaker in such an immersive setup. Under each monitor you will find four M8 threaded mounting holes and various mounting options are soon to be available from ADAM Audio. Similar to the other monitors in the A Series, I find their design to be attractive and stylish and everything you’d expect from an ADAM Audio studio monitor.

I’ll paraphrase what I said about the A7V’s DSP features as the same applies here. On the back of the A44H’s you’ll find Room Adaptation buttons, volume knob, a voicing button and input select buttons that switches between balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA inputs. The Room Adaptation buttons (Bass, Desk, Presence, Treble) quickly allows for basic compensation of bass build up, desk reflections, the mids and highs. The voicing button toggles between Pure and UNR (Uniform Natural Response) tunings. Pure is a more neutral response and UNR offers a response curve similar to the A7X. More on the EXT option in a moment.
Rather handily these DSP based features can be controlled remotely over ethernet using the ADAM A Control application. This can save you from having to get up and manually change settings one monitor at a time. Getting started is as simple as connecting both the speakers and your computer to a network switch or WiFi router and then installing the A Control application. Aside from controlling the settings found on the back of the monitors you also have access to an Advanced mode. With this you can fine tune the sound using 6 bands of equalisation. Frequency, Gain, Q and Filter Type can be changed on each band.

Another plus the new A series comes via their partnership with Sonarworks. By using Sonarworks SoundID Reference software and a measurement mic, both of which are available separately, you can create and export calibration profiles specifically for your room. Once you have run through the calibration process in SoundID Reference you can export your room's profile. At this point it's worth mentioning that for best results ADAM recommends using the No Boost 0dB export option. You then simply upload this file to run directly on the A44H’s DSP back in the A Control application.
The benefit of doing this is that you no longer need to run room correction software separately on your computer, because the monitor's would be taking care of the correction on board. At this time you can disconnect the ethernet cables if you wish. When either Advanced mode or SoundID Reference mode are in use you will notice the EXT light activated on the back of the monitors. You can now toggle between Pure, UNR and whichever of these two modes you had activated directly on the units or in the A Control application, if of course you kept the ethernet cables connected.
Once again I can't be anything but impressed with what Adam Audio have produced here. They both look and sound impressive and as mentioned the on-board DSP options are an absolutely fantastic addition! Despite their compact size, they provide a powerful, dynamic and precise sound that deliver an enjoyable experience. They would even be a great option for leisure listening. How they perform for you will depend on many things...your room size, placement, your setup in general etc...but for me they sounded fabulous and I really enjoyed their wide sweet spot. I have no qualms in saying that like myself, many people would be extremely happy to work with these in front of them for extended periods of time. Understandably, however, some will always be looking for even more low end. If you find yourself in that camp and you really appreciate the A44H’s compactness and design aesthetics then I’d consider adding a sub. That said, being fortunate enough to have access to some really nice high end reference headphones here I found that using these in combination with the A44H’s made for a really sweet mixing solution.
Bottom line, they pleasantly surprised me. Sure, they won’t be for everyone…nothing ever is, but for those of you in the market, who’s favourite retailer has a good returns policy, I highly recommend you try them out in your own space before dismissing them. Like a lot of gear, it’s only when you work with them in your own space (after setting up room correction where necessary) that you’ll be able to truly tell if they’re just the ticket for you or not. But I personally can’t fault them. A great alternative, top marks once again!
