In addition to several headphones and a car or two, it's simple to add a second monitor pair to cross-check and provide a more down to earth translation. I use JBL 3 series, in my case the LSR 306 Mk2. The 305s are great but lacking bass, the 308s just muddy up the composite bass, and the 306s are a plausible and inexpensive compromise.

What do you mean by format? Analog signal does not have any specific format like digital. Analog in/out works with typical line level signals. Connector type is balanced TRS.

So not quite the top line PMC pricing or Meyer Sound.

Always surprises me with speakers in this price range that are not soffit speakers but freestanding. Curious to hear when they are in demo rooms or if Genelec does a release/debut event in LA.

Also the incliner is a weird choice. I've never needed to tip a speaker back. If anything, the need is to angle downwards.

If the 8351's are going to be too similar to my 8050b in terms of weight in the sound, then I'll consider going to the 8361's I think.

Last week I finally got a chance to demo the 8351B with GLM Kit.

First of all: everything I read about Genelec's superb stereo image and ultra flat frequency response is true. It's truly amazing. I had a demo pair of 8351A 1,5 years ago and 8351B is really a step up.

All that being said - Genelecs are just not for me. I remember reading here some comments where people said that 8351A and B presented the mix as finished when it actually wasn't. It was the same in my case. I had them for 7 days, listened a lot to my refererence tracks and music in general. First thing I noticed was how lifeless the high end was - no sparkle even in tracks I know that have excessive sibilance - just dull highs. Second - upper bass seemed muddy, I wanted to cut it on almost every reference track (I'm talking about some of the most amazing mixes done by best engineers). FYI: my room is very well treated, I had many different monitors in there (high and lower end) and none of them ever sounded like this).

After a couple of days I started to do some mixing. I began with tracks I mixed a few months ago, just to see how will basic balancing work on Genelecs. Starting from lows - I just don't get the low end on 8351B. It's "wooly" - lacks detail and clarity. Mids were good, althogh I noticed that Genelecs didn't like my even slighlty agressive eq-ing. Every stronger boost in 1-5kHz area sounded bad, like the monitors were telling me "this doesn't sound right". Highs - like I said earlier - dull, lifeless. Every attempt to brighten things up sounded sizzly or harsh. Dialing in compression was very good, I could hear what different attack and release times and ratios were doing to the sound. Spatial effects also sounded good, there was very clear sense of space and front to back depth (minus the dull highs).

So, after 3 days of getting used to their sound and 4 days of mixing I had 4 tracks to check. All of them sounded really good on 8351Bs so the time came to plug in my monitors and listen to those mixes. To my surprise the mixes sounded bad. Lows were boomy and muddy, mids - withdrawn, with no presence and focus, highs - harsh. Everything sounded just not finished. The same songs mixed on ATCs (where I did a lot of aggresive EQ) sounded spectacular on Genelcs). When I tried the same moves on 8351B they were screaming at me "this sounds bad!". I've been mixing professionally for the last 13 years and never experienced anything like this. I love some of the aspects of Genelec's sound - razor sharp imaging, very wide stereo field, but I just can't mix on them, they're too flat, clinical and lifeless, not really fun to work on (for me).
