So I made a load of Drum & Percussion sounds and then Sampled them into NI Maschine and made a Beat. 4 Bars and repeats 3 times. Added a bit of Phaser to the Hats and Reverb to the Rim.

I've been playing with the arpeggiator a bit. It is kind of quirky. When synced to external MIDI clock the Tempo knob adjusts the note division. You got to listen really good to make sure you have the right division setting. Then the other really big quirky thing is that you need to play your arpeggiator chord slightly ahead of the beat. If not, the arpeggiator will skip the down beat and play late.

It does work, but it takes a bit to get used to it.

Yeah ,I also noticed this ! ,also I’m really liking the sequencer overall and gave the sequencer a deep dive(ish) last night and found the note pool / probability function combined is a good method for some melodic mayhem

That doesn’t sound great. I hate arpeggiators that don’t lock in tight to the beat.

It does lock in perfect on midi clock start ,if you playing live for ideas for some reason you have to be a millisecond before for it to lock in ,it sounds worse than it actually is ,could be a FW update ?

Yeah I've experienced other arpeggiators that behave like that. I guess it's because when it's time to play a note, the synth is scanning to see which keys are held down, so if you're like a millisecond late hitting the key at the scan instance it'll miss your note and play it on the next note event instead. But yeah you get used to it after a while, you develop an 'arpeggiator feel'.

I could Messenger.... or I could Digitone MKI + Nymphes

I don't really need another keybed, and I've owned both Digitone and Nymphes in the past. I love them both and miss them both. However, I also have a monkey brain which really likes shiny new things, and the monkey brain is really kicking in strong at the moment.

It is precisely the other way around - the arpeggiator drops the note *because* it is tempo locked and spot on the beat.

The alternative would be that it lets you play late and "rounds it" backwards, which means that the first division would have to be shorter than the others, meaning the cadence would be sloppy and then people would complain about that.

Playing a bit ahead of the quantized beat with arpeggiators/sequencers is normal and necessary. You get used to it quickly.

You'd definitely get a lot more bang for your buck with that OG combo, especially if you get a used Digitone. If you already have a solid analog monosynth, this is a no-brainer IMHO.

I did the monkey brain thing and bought the messenger.

GC gave me 15% off for the trade in promotion running until tomorrow. Traded an old guitar that I never play and has been on Craigslist for months. Moog products are supposed to be excluded from the offer but I just said I’ll only do the trade if they can give me the 15% and the manager was nice.

Well, nothing wrong with a nice brand new Moog monosynth. You can always get the other stuff later I've been meaning to get a used Digitone for ages... and I keep on buying other new stuff instead. Guilty as charged

ya'll making me want a moog messenger to mess around with even though i've bought already 2 synths this year.. Maybe in Fall/Winter I'll pick one up. I kind of like the Labrynth as well.

Got one at GC, surprised they had one in, though it was hidden out back and not on the floor. I’ve owned around four OG moogs and currently have 7 or 8 newer ones since late 80’s.
First impression: it doesn’t sound like a Moog. Squelchy and noisy in most presets. Mine had 30 presets-bank one and 14 out of 16 bank 2. As of yesterday, there’s instructions on how to get all 15 banks with button pushes instead of computer. Welcome bit of info. Now restored.
So my snapshot is this sounds like a nord lead and Roland Gaia run through a Moog filter. Very virtual analog. I kept looking to see if noise was added to a patch or too much overdrive many times. This wasn’t it. I wondered if it was band pass but these patches were always lp2 and lp4. It doesn’t have obvious sweet spots like say sirin and Minimoog do. Even the micromoog had wide areas of sweet spots. Careful dialing in gets things better but in general the presets are too samey and too non analog in feel. The YouTube stuff doesn’t really capture the sound either, strange.
The build is plastic akin to Korg wavestate. Pots seem solid.
I think the way to think of this and not get disappointed is ‘it’s an Sh-101 reborn with lots of new tricks’
And a hold button is a nice touch. Now getting a sound worthy of a hold? That’s the challenge. Not sure it’s a keeper. Subsequent 25 when they blew out at 699 is a far superior synth overall.

It locks in tight to the beat. You just have to "trigger" it just ahead of the beat. Once that's done correctly it plays with the beat perfectly.

Dang. That Messenger really pairs nicely with the Take 5.

I haven't powered it up yet but have unboxed it.

Very first impressions are that the keys feel very good. The housing feels fine to me. I'm happy with a lightweight option. Size is the same width basically as my prophet 5 module which is just right to me. Mod Wheel and Pitch bend feel great. The knobs are tall and skinny versions of the Subsequent line. Like extra tall extra skinny. Filter knob is good. I like the size and layout quite a bit, and my first impression of the keybed is very good.

There is a big horizontal divot in the undercarriage which is kind of annoying for velcro, but actually allows stand teeth to sit right in there and hold it stready. I'm not sure if it's meant for accessories what its purpose is but some pros and cons there, not a big deal at all moreso just curious if it had an intention behind the design.

I don't like the buttons so much. Just prefer minima loud clicky buttons and these are hard and loud and clicky. That's something I can get past, but I am not a fan of just out of the gate.

Excited to see how it sounds in my setup. Only thing that really matters. Gonna make a simple house track with Messenger, P5, A4, and AR and see how she goes
