Back when the forum was started in 2002, it was known as Gearslutz. The name was chosen to humorously poke fun at the lack of control our community members had over their equipment buying. At the same time, another humorous phrase was often used: Gear Acquisition Syndrome or ‘GAS’. So, a Gearslut would have ‘GAS’. This applied to buying microphones, guitars, synths, mixing consoles, guitar amps and musical instruments in general. These all fell under the GAS / Gearslutz umbrella.
Admittedly, the name did raise eyebrows from time to time. From about 2010, there were occasional requests for the forum to change its name. As the forum grew in popularity and became a global resource for pro audio and related topics, we would hear stories that because of the ‘slut’ part of the name, the forum was getting blocked in some colleges, and people in the religious or educational space were feeling uneasy browsing, discussing, or recommending the forum. To remove the offending word from sight, we made an alternative Gearsz logo for people who weren’t comfortable with the name.
In early 2021, a petition on change.org called for us to change the name of Gearslutz. We thought long and hard about this and decided it was time to do so.
Here is my reaction to the petition:
In April of 2021, we re-branded as Gearspace.com
