I gave up on using super/hyper cardoids as house mics years ago. Had too many occaisions of feedback with poor (re)positioning of mics and poor technique.
Sticking with cardoids has been so much easier - in this situation.
With IEMs and/or a well controlled stage layout and capable use, they're great. But that's not what I have.
GBF isn't as simple as a mic's polar pattern - so many other elements come into play. The OP is in a tough environment, and it doesn't surprise me that they've had problems.
