all he really did was change the capture to fit the eq calibration system, which is now up to the user to get "right". lol
but most peeps don't have a clue as to what's right, because they don't realize that there is no right and it's just what sounds good to them.
i think the problem is thinking there is a right way to do anything.
the fact is, that at least 90% of vsx users are guys like you and me that nobody cares what music we produce or how it sounds... so what does it really matter what eq profile we use, as long as it sounds good to us.
but then theres the large percentage of peeps that have no clue what sounds good to them, so fug it... none of it really matters... and afaic, he should have just made new captures of the rooms that sounded different and left it at that... or just re-eq'd the v4 captures and called it a day. lol
to me, leaving something like eq'ing control rooms up to the general public is just a bad idea.
Really Lazoo ... I have to totally disagree with your assessments.
First ... being an Audio Engineer [Tracking - Mixing - and now Mastering] for some 40+ years ... I can clearly state that people care greatly of the final results. As do I.
As for how a Room is Tuned [or VSX headphones] ... everyone has preferences ... but the ruling factor comes down to 1 thing.
How does it Translate across multiple, various, playback systems and scenarios. Period.
Everything else , is style choices ... and taste.
No one 'really' cares how it got there ... as long as it sound good on their systems played.
The possible 'common' goal of most 'House Curves' is to find a 'Neutral Spectrum' balance. The Tops and Bottoms may be hyped for personal preference.
The Control Room has a major impact.
My past 3 Control Room designs are RFZ. [Reflection Free Zone]. A concept that I was not familiar with ... coming from Hidley designs [back in the 70s].
This RFZ design build is what I hoped it would be.
I've rarely used headphones for anything more than possibly checking BkgVoc panning ... and an overall general listen at times.
Since going ITB ... different options available.
I've purchased and played with maybe 5 or 6 different 'Headphone' simulation plugs ... from Abby Road to RealP, Sienna ... and other's names forgotten.
They all used my SENN 650's.
As 'fun as it might have been, the so called translation was not there for me. Until VSX.
No where near perfect at the start ... but it did results better than all the others.
I mainly used it for some of the Clubs, a car or 2, and mostly Howie's Room ... because back in my day, Howie was one of my Mastering Engineers ... and enjoyed being in his Room, as well as the conversations.
VSX-5 has taking these simulations to another level. But the require the User to input data [ECCO calibration].
For those that had no idea, and want something AI or other to make it 'easy' ... well, probably best to go with something like Ozone ... and accept whatever it does, and move on.
I like to test whatever 'technology' I can. Music and Sounds have been my life and love. [yes ... some may consider it a 'sickness' ... whatever]. And of my opinion, nothing has replaced the Talents of a qualified [experienced] Engineer .... a Song Writer ... a Master Musician ... and so on.
It takes dedication ... and [what seems], many, many years.
One nice thing ... it's never boring ... and always something new to learn.
