What size are your spinners?

I couldn’t have a PC with spinners in…how much data do you hoard?

Standard WD Blacks, Seagate ... 6 installed ... 20+ in storage.

I'm a Mastering Engineer working wide variety of styles.

Also do many Restoration Projects.

The working storage size on some of these projects come close to 1 Terabyte.

I do some project 'clean up' ... but its time consuming, and could lead to unintended issues. So I just put 'full' drives in rotational storage.

As storage size/prices line up, I upgrade to larger drives and transfer over. Most are from 8 - 20 Terabytes. [just did this at the new year].

I also have an M2 Samsung 2T Boot Drive ... but for the new build, going to the 4T.

Why do you need a 4TB boot?

Again, though it has tempered (which wasn't something I was keen on), the Dark 901 could be considered as a balance between noise and cooling (and is flexible enough to try different configurations with it).

It's a spacious full tower (over 5000 cubic inches interior volume according to Google AI). It's pricey, however. The Fractal Meshify 3 XL is a little smaller, not that that was being considered, since it's so open.

With the case on the floor and the glass pointed toward the wall 1 foot away, it's like the glass isn't even there. And that glass is thick and heavy. It has a little bit of lighting, like most cases now, which I just leave on white for ambient lighting. No colors, no lightshow.

Better question: why do you need a boot drive at all? In general, you don't. However, it seems RJ likes having a case full of spinning metal for maximum storage capacity (rather than a NAS on a 10GB network, for example).

I use a 4tb nvme as my main drive, partitioned once to keep the system drive smaller so that image backups are faster and easier - and I wouldn't/won't even partition it whenever I get around to upgrading my NAS and storage from 12TB to 30TB+.

If your case will have a lot of spinning metal, I can understand the desire for a more silent case to mute the annoying clickety-clack sounds. I don't miss mechanical hard drives in my PC at ALL.

The Fractal Design Torrent got space for 6 harddrives. - so if you get for example one 18TB drive, and consolidate a few HDD, then you would have more space.

The Plextor burner is probably louder than any optimization you can make with fans - just get anything then that is cheap. (or get an external one)

The top of the case will be used in nearly all good case design. If the top is closed, it will be significantly louder (we are talking about +15db - probably +20 db under full load).


If you need so more Harddrives, I would get the Fractal Define 7 or even the XL. XL got space for 18 hard drives. However I would then not go for the Noctua cooler, but mount an AIO cooler for the CPU on the top (arctic liquid freezer 3 ) - and put 3 of the 140mm in the front and 1 in the back. The bigger the case is, the harder it will be to push airflow through and the CPU will be the biggest heat maker.

What likely would be the best option is to have a dedicated NAS there. So the NAS for example is in another room - connected via ethernet to the tower. The NAS then is configured to backup the one or two drives in your system automatically , has a RAID configuration so that a hard drive can fail and backs up the data to something like Backblaze too.

this is the "Church Organ #15 " by Blueprint. looks a bit under 3Gb using three mics. it is raw "straight out of the box" (Full Preset) with no additional tweaking except raising Elmer's (main out) in the DAW.

Around 20 years ago my brother and I saw the Beach Boys in concert. Very boring. We walked out. Brian wasn't there, by the way.

A couple of years later I got the honor and privilege of going to a Brian Wilson Band concert. As a listening experience, probably the finest concert I have ever heard. Brian mentioned that Melinda liked a song they sang backstage, and while it was not part of the setlist, they were going to do it for her. The band proceeded to sing the song, all a capella.

My reaction was, "this is what heaven must sound like."
Don't know the name of the song. The whole concert was superb.

If the disk fails…I don’t lose data…I swap it out restore and image and keep working….

Partitioning an OS is a PITA and it’s unnecessary complication.

@ elambo yes it is free (somewhat... no monetary cost) you have to sign up and 'order' it using Fastspring's system (as records i suppose) but it costs nothing but your info and we all know they sell those lists so the companies profit in the end

they will send you a serial to add to Native Access via email so as to manage samples.

so there are small hoops to jump through but it is worth the time for me for the quality of the samples

Yeah, sigh, it's been a real rough few weeks of attrition on all of this... Sly, Brian Wilson, and than hearing this morning about Douglas McCarthy of Nitzer Ebb, and that hits close to home for me as well..... sigh...

I know it's the course of life, and getting older myself... often times I don't want to pick up the phone or look at texts to find out certain things if you know what I mean...

I'm burying one of my best friends on Saturday and have to do the eulogy after doing the obit and whatnot, and while that can be exhausting mentally to some degree, it's been easier for me to put my concerns on being there, or solving problems for his kids (as he was a single dad), but I'm not lying to myself in recognizing those efforts absolutely are being used to somewhat push back my own processing of it... and I know I'm just kinda ducking my own feelings on that...

(and why I haven't been so active here as in middle moved continents again and dealing with those details etc and just the mood that settles over that sort of thing....)

Regardless, without trying to come off as pedantic, I hope the people here, and those I talk to, banter, debate, discuss and learn from, in all respect and appreciation are both taking care of themselves and also making sure details of their lives are addressed as should (especially with kids), as hell.... we just don't know do we?

I have found that swapping pickups with the same build stlye (i.E Jazz single coils), doesn't really do much, especially not if you properly record an A/B. At least it doesn't create a change that I couldn't get with an EQ on the amp.

Just put the flats on it and EQ the bass.

It’s ok to get busy on the front end to better process a loss like this over a bit of time.

but yeah, I think the nature of most of us fairly active here is to 'get busy', and while we may chin scratch on things like TDR filters vs this that and the other... so it goes... it's in a good way. (at least for me, as much as dramarama can occur around this thread, it generally is in good nature/fun, and we don't all have to agree to get along... and I've gotten a lot of great purchasing advice, and more importantly other solutions to problems from those here without question ranging from cabling to hw to sw to just how to deal with the ex or whatever the hell is burning down or needs to be addressed).

I had a surprising experience last week, where I was without a bass and needed one, and I'm used to my vintage p-basses and other cork sniffing whatever in that regard.... and on a lark bought a Squier P-bass "sonic edition" for under $160 USD on sale iirc... and was just like a 'whatever' thing that I could just return if it sucked.... and I gotta say... while it's not all that and a sandwich, I was pretty amazed at how the dual single coil (with the damn stock strings that I was gonna swap out with flat), added to the fact I'm used to playing a thicker neck than than essentially the jazz maple neck on it, and with a body of poplar I imagine.... er.... um...

I'm not saying it is all that at all... but damn if Squier hasn't gotten a lot better over the years and it's absolutely functional, intonation just fine, even dropping d etc.. and while doesn't have a lot of options in that configuration with the split single coil pickup etc..

I was so pleasantly surprised by it's ability (not even given price so much as)... just to do what I needed it to do or function for me in a place where I simply did not have a bass guitar and needed one. I didn't feel like I was stranded out on a dinghy with a pos....

I got and continue to get what I need out of it now in a certain scenario... and would be fine playing out with it... not the best bass I own, but certainly not an embarrassment, especially with the outboard or plugs that most of us have to get it home...

I certainly didn't expect that on a "I need it, know it's not great but please get me through the situation" purchase you know?

Yeah budget instruments are really good now. I remember my first bass was a used Ibanez GIO with a defective truss rod, you could fly a plane through the 12th fret

I have done quite a few pickup swaps just to test things. There was more difference in for example a Labella Steel to a Rotosound one that was thicker, than there was between the fancy pickup and the basic one
