I have Komplete 9, I think. So both of those would be upgrades. Admittedly, I'm biased against IK also, but good tools are good tools. In fairness, they seem to be moving in an admirable direction with their new monitors.

And I agree, I certainly wouldn't bemoan missing a cheaper price from PA on that, I paid the same direct from Louder than Liftoff 6 months ago or whenever it came out, and absolutely do not get upset when I see it cheaper, and I'd rather them get the money then the f'ing Francisco Tech Bros....

I saw the mention of the free Waves plugin that's going to be announced, but browsing their site, they've got a lot of deals on their bundles. Horizon is now $199. I'm not even sure if I like Waves anymore, and that's still tempting.

I waved goodbye to waves without even ever riding the wave. They are so two thousand and late girlfriend. If I want to sink hundreds of pounds into software I'll never even register let alone use then it's gotta be uad u dig?

Only if you need updates. As long as you don't need the new stuff, you can stay on older versions.

Yes - I am still on 13 and 14 for a lot of their plugins and works fine. Some of their stuff is classic and works fantastic like their renaissance bundle. Also plugins like bass rider, vocal rider, etc. are quite useful. I wouldn't just write them off. One good thing is I have plugins that I've had from them from 15 years ago that I used in sessions. I can still pull up a session with those on it and open it and it works with the updated plugins I have that are M1 compatible. There's no "oh that was a version 2 plugin and now this is a version 7 plugin". That I think has to count for something.

I'd say this is more fair than being forced to pay monthly with a SaaS. Upgrade as you go is a good compromise between owning in perpetuity and 'renting'.

I've owned Waves stuff for about 7 years and have never paid WUP, I'm on Windows 10 so probably different on Mac.

You do you, but waves still has a ton of industry-standard plugins that are on #1 singles every week, that UAD has no direct equivalent for.

UAD has some awesome plugins, but Stuff like rvox, Mv2, C4, debreath, silk, etc do stuff that UAD doesn’t even try to do.

Plus, tbh…some of the waves vintage emulations are actually better than, or at least different to the UAD emulations, in useful ways.


Waves Puigchild is a killer Fairchild emulator, while the UAD Fairchild, to me, always feels like it’s making stuff feel smaller instead of bigger. The UAD 1176 has some really cool harmonic saturation, and makes a great distortion plugin, but to my ear, the waves CLA76 gets the compression curves, the snap and attack, better and truer to the originals.

I use UAD plugins every day, and if you only have the budget for one solid bundle, and if UAD is what you are drawn towards, I would say go for it. UAD essentials plus included DAW plugins is absolutely enough to make a hit record. But the same is true of waves platinum or whatever.

From a Mac perspective I have been using Waves for longer than that and only had to upgrade once (I can't remember the os version that caused this).

I contacted Waves and they sorted a deal where I added one plugin to my collection for about $10 and that gave me WUP for the collection so I got all the updates.

So it hasn't cost me much
