I've only been into hardware synths for a few years and although I saw reviews of the DeepMind ages ago, I completely forgot that some synths have fans until I got a DeepMind 12D after the recent price reduction. It made me realise how lucky I had been not to have accidentally ended up with any other synths with fans during my recent purchasing spree. If either the MatrixBrute or the Quantum that I have fallen in love with so very much had fans, then I'm not sure my love for them would have flourished in quite the same way. Especially given how much time, effort and expense I've put into keeping most of my computer gear very quiet, and how impressed I've been with how quiet powerful modern pcs can be made these days. I think I realised how much fans drove me crazy during the peak of pc (and graphics card) fan noisiness and lack of manufacturer care about this sometime in the 2000's, and am glad things got better for those that care in more recent years.

Well, we need some detail to that so in part your right but also not, just because its discrete is not an guarantee if its going to be hot or not, its how its designed, in overall. I guess its the XMOS CPUs is the major culprit here. So lets check out the cheapest one XS1-L4A-64-TQ48-I4-ND and what do we find? Oh yes, 375mA/500Mhz per tile and CPU, dont know how XMOS actually count total W per Mhz since it also depends on code runing but this will generate heat , now multiply by at least 8 or 11 and i haven't included the Linux CPU. Then lets go to the more beefier XMOS CPU's and there i stop looking into the datasheet! Usually one stretch for natural convection of heat transfers but thermal distribution in closed systems is a complex science.

Disclamier if Moog says otherwise!

I would suggest people looking into if you can use an horizontal fan instead they come in all sizes if that could improve, but immediately have to fix fans inside a new 8000usd synth? Really?



But also to some of you MoogOne owners you might consider water cooling, you can put in flourecent lightning as water flushes by, a toilet knob jerking up and down when playing fat chords?

Yes, I'm also concerned to read about the fan noise bothering some people. I can completely understand, especially with the long boot-up time (as opposed to instantaneous for many synths), the problem this could be for someone trying to record a Moog One live with other instruments.

I, too, have a classical concert-goer's ear for noise, meaning, I hate it and want to stuff the handkerchief right up any available orifice on the person in the back row who won't stop sneezing during the quiet passages! I also regretted the noise a PC used to make, and would not allow one in my music room (until more recently, when the self-built one I use includes large, 120cm fans that are almost silent).

I'm sure it's easy to escape with headphones, or direct recording, but I hope Moog has a good solution, quickly, for those troubled by it. It's something that stopped me from ever being interested in the Kronos, not that that affected that instrument's sales!

I don't think it would stop me from getting a Moog One, though.

But in all honesty Moog is expected to have a silent fan in a 8k synth.....maybe in a cheap synth like a deepmind it is acceptable....but the moog one should have the quietest fan on the market

In a nutshell, my rep was told(in the morning) it was a go to be sent out Wednesday only to have a systemwide notice go out to all reps in the early afternoon walking that back, and that no units would go until the next morning. For whatever reason, that’s still unknown to both of us, it didn’t ship Thursday either. So this morning I get a joyous email from my rep saying he finally saw that it was shipping.

I gotta give my rep a ton of props because he kept me in the loop the entire time.

With respect to the fan, I can certainly hear it, but it doesn't really stand out above my HVAC and desktop computer noise.

That said, for those of you in a dead quiet studio I can definitely see it being an annoyance.

You should've seen GS a few years back, it was like trying to read or post in the middle of a Cat 5 hurricane! The place is surprisingly sane now, by comparison. Kudos to the mods.

It might be an issue for me, especially if the fans get louder with age, as fans tend to do.

In my case, I monitor using open headphones, so any noise comes through. My PC is particularly annoying in that regard, which is why I'm excited about Apple potentially releasing new Mac Minis next week. They might be a cheap and quiet alternative to my current DAW computer.

Moog should immediately release specs and measurements regarding fan noise and a statement about the fans and get ahead of this. Just some friendly advice to a great company. I do think this is a real issue.

I can only imagine the sense of panic and dread that they must have felt when they discovered that they had a heat issue. No one specs out the design of a new synth with the intent of having five fans inside of the case from the get go. They must have realized fairly late in the game that heat was going to be an issue, and then iterated on the amount of fans that they would need in order to keep this thing temperature stable.
